Affordable Care Act enrollment

Despite alarm created by repeal, Affordable Care Act enrollment still open

The Affordable Care Act enrollment began November 1, 2016 for coverage starting January 1st 2017 but the enrollment period extends until January 31st for coverage starting March 1st 2017. You can still apply and receive coverage and subsidies through 2017. Please call for additional information:

Affordable Care Act Mylene Colom

Mylene Colom, Lead of the Hispanic and Consumer Markets for Horizon BCBSNJ

The Affordable Care Act enrollment is still open despite the alarm created by the new Trump Administration’s repeal announced during the weekend. The announcement has created a lot of confusion and uncertainty about the healthcare coverage of millions of Americans including the 22 million that recently entered the program nationwide.

“We want to let people know that there is still time to enroll in an ACA healthcare plan until January 31st to ensure they receive coverage on March 1st of this year,” said Mylene Colom, Lead for Consumer and Hispanic Markets, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey (Horizon BCBSNJ). “I can’t tell you how many people have reached out concerned that the ACA had been eliminated thus losing any financial assistance they needed to purchase a quality health plan for them and their family. That is NOT the case. We do not know the changes the new Administration will make or when but we know that this is still the law and assistance to obtain health coverage is still available.”

As the Lead of the Hispanic and Consumer Markets for Horizon BCBSNJ, Mylene Colom is dedicated to maximizing the number of NJ residents who enroll in and retain health coverage made available through the ACA.

Through her leadership and strong community partnerships, Horizon BCBSNJ has enrolled over 38K uninsured Latinos throughout the state. Her passion for all aspects of health education flows through the expertise she shares regarding the consumer experience and best practices around Affordable Care Act enrollment and engagement.

Brunch with Benefits and important information for New Jerseans

Talking to Mylene and her team at a “Brunch with Benefits” event organized by the Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey (SHCCNJ) and sponsored her company, we found out that this NJ provider is satisfied with the way the Affordable Care Act enrollment has worked in New Jersey.

Affordable Care Act enrollement

Brunch with Benefits organized by SHCCNJ

The Garden State runs its enrollment through the Federal Exchange –Gov. Christie refused to expand the program in the state except for coverage under Medicaid. New enrollees need to apply through Healthcare.gov.

“Until 2016, there were five carriers offering plans in NJ through the Federal Exchange but this year, three of them left the exchange. This situation opened opportunities for Horizon, and we have had one of the most successful Affordable Care Act enrollment period so far,” Mylene explained.

Open enrollment began November 1, 2016 for coverage starting January 1st 2017 but the enrollment period extends until January 31st for coverage starting March 1st 2017.

The Affordable Care Act enrollment in New Jersey numbers

By the end of last December, the NJ exchange had received 273,210 applications including new and renewal ones –compared to 288,573 enrollments during the open period in 2015/2016, meaning there will certainly be an increase this year.

“We have been conducting educational events throughout the state such as this one with the chamber just to provide people information with Promotoras that can speak both English and Spanish,” Mylene said.

It was nerve racking, it was exciting, and it was intoxicating!  A newbie at the Hispanicize event –my first time participating–, the TECLA Awards at Hispanicize 2015 turned out to be such a combination of emotions!

The venue, the Marriot Marquis at Biscayne Boulevard in Miami 19th floor was gorgeous: pool, outside setting for the welcoming reception; inside, the living-room style setting with white armchairs and a central stage. Manny “the man at Hispanicize” Ruiz gave the intro words in his own casual style to around 300 people who attended the awards reception.

Meeting new friends we have been following on Twitter was such a treat: Melanie GonzaLez @mendezgonzales, Lynn Ponder @Ponderful, Lissa Monet Morales @xoxoLizza, Jeannette Kaplun @JeannetteKaplun, and so many others we admire and follow!

Best Business or Finance Blog was one of the last to come up during the first part of the night. We were competing with Cuponeando and Think Multicultural. My kudos to both of them for the great job they do!

Although I wanted to win –of course, you work all year and live for these moments– I did not think being such a young platform we would have a chance– but when they mentioned LatinasIn Business.us as the winner, a feeling of fulfillment and completion took over me.

At only six months of launching LIBizus, we have over 5000 followers on our site and that is the most rewarding feeling: there is a niche looking for what we offer. Now, being recognized by our colleagues is even more exciting, the welcome to the Hispanicize family and the world of Latino social media. That is more than we could expect!

I have met many bloggers I admire; many of them have been in the social media trend for a long time. I have a lot to learn from these amazing Latinas, and meeting them allows me to now reach out and invite them to be a part of OUR LIBizus. After all, this is what we are, this is what we do: we tell the stories of amazing Latinas in business making history.

A special thanks to the Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey (SHCCNJ) for always supporting LIBizus and for the great work they are doing at reaching out in social media. Gracias Prez Carlos Medina, my friend and mentor Luis O De la Hoz and all the team at SHCCNJ. I’m proud to represent you everywhere I go!

AffordableCareAct

ACA for small business from ADP and SHCCNJ

AffordableCareActADP and the Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey (SHCCNJ) have partnered to present “What Small Businesses Need to Know about the Affordable Care Act (ACA),” an online FREE webinar on Thursday January 29, 2015 from 11:00 am to 12:30pm EST.

A leading global provider of Human Capital Management (HCM) solutions, ADP announced the availability of information, enhancements and solutions designed to help small, midsized and large businesses in the United States manage their compliance with the evolving requirements of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

ADP can help companies approach their ACA compliance strategically by providing solutions, resources and expertise around employee communications, eligibility, reporting and enrollment.

ADP will provide up-to-date information on the Affordable Care Act –la Ley de Cuidado de Salud a Bajo Precio– and best practices specific to small businesses in a one-hour presentation followed by a Q&A period.

1. What main regulations will be covered during the webinar about Affordable Care Act for small business owners?

ADP’s January 27 webinar will address the following ACA-related topics:

  • Components of the ACA that apply to small businesses
  • The Small Business Health Care Tax Credit and how to know whether you qualify
  • The Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP) marketplace and the changes that came about in November, 2014
  • The Employer Mandate and what it means for small business owners
  • Notification, reporting, and record-keeping requirement

2. What are the main benefits of the law for small businesses?

Benefits stemming from the ACA include:

Tax credits: Some small businesses could be eligible for the Small Business Health Care Tax Credit

Access: The Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP) marketplace is only available to small employers.  (Our webcast will focus on these provisions and provide eligibility requirements.)

Recruiting and retaining employees:  ADP’s research has shown that organizations are extending coverage beyond the mandated ACA full-time employee population to attract and retain great people.  What’s more, in our November, 2014 ACA webcast, more than two thirds (69 percent) of the 1,703 respondents to our real-time poll question (“Does Your company currently offer health insurance to its employees?”), said they did offer insurance to their employees.  Given that most respondents were from small businesses, this demonstrates that not only do many small businesses offer health insurance, but it also reinforces the importance of keeping informed about ACA-mandated health insurance reforms.

3. What timetable should small business owners pay attention to in order to stay in compliance?affordable care act ahead sign

2014:

Annual dollar limits prohibited
Waiting periods 90 days or less
Pre-existing condition exclusions prohibited
Wellness incentives

2015+:

Employer shared responsibility
Reporting requirements
Excise tax on high-cost plans (2018)

Small employers, those with less than 50 full-time equivalent employees (FTEs) as defined by the Affordable Care Act (ACA), are not subject to shared responsibility (a penalty for failing to offer group health insurance). However, small employers are still subject to other ACA provisions.

Use this checklist to help you understand some of these requirements.

4. What can ADP offer to its affiliates and potential members that other competitors cannot provide?

As a leading global provider of Human Capital Management (HCM) solutions, ADP provides information, enhancements and solutions designed to help small, midsized and large businesses in the United States manage their compliance with the evolving requirements of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).  ADP can help companies approach their ACA compliance strategically by providing solutions, resources and expertise around employee communications, eligibility, reporting and enrollment.

Recognizing that complying with the ACA can be a challenge for small businesses, ADP’s introduced additional tools and resources to its popular RUN Powered by ADP® (“RUN”) human resource and payroll platform, including:

ACA Dashboard – Provides tools, reports, and useful links to help clients understand how the ACA impacts their business and employees;

FTE Calculator – Helps clients determine their number of Full Time Equivalent employees and if they may be considered an ‘applicable large employer’ and therefore be subject to the Shared Responsibility provision of the ACA;

Time and Attendance – provides workforce planning to improve time tracking, apply employee schedules and monitor employee hours to help clients comply with Shared Responsibility;

Health Care Tax Credit Assist – Automatically integrates with the RUN platform and organizes information about employees, which includes wages, hours and premiums to help businesses determine their eligibility for the Small Business Health Care Tax Credit; and

Ongoing ACA Alerts and Education – Legislative and regulatory alerts and educational materials, including webinars and updates, to help clients keep apprised of latest ACA developments.

HR Help Desk – ADP’s team of HR certified professionals available to help clients navigate and understand their ACA responsibilities.

5. Are you going to allow a Q&A session and if yes, how is it going to work?

ADP is making available to attendees of the webcast a checklist in English and Spanish titled “ACA Checklist for Small Businesses” that can be downloaded during the webcast (link to checklist appears below).  In addition, we have a 30-minute bilingual Q&A session scheduled after the presentation.
