Retreat, live and learn at Blue Osa: How a yoga retreat & spa in Costa Rica is pivoting

Charge ahead with confidence that this too shall pass and the world awaits you. This is our outlook in the midst of the pandemic as we rescheduled Renovad global retreats to 2021 and continue to collaborate with our destination partners, such as Blue Osa Yoga Retreat & Spa in Costa Rica.

Rewriting the path forward

Blue Osa Yoga Retreat & Spa is a special place that embodies awareness and transformation. It holds stillness for a weary traveler and soul. As Yogi Aaron, co-founder and lead of Yoga Teacher Training programs at Blue Osa, shared with us: “Especially at this time, we need to turn inward and be at peace within ourselves. Take this time to cultivate faith in yourself, your spirit guide or god, to walk on the path you are meant to be on. Ask the important questions of your life. In some ways, we are being given the chance to have a do over. How are you going to rewrite the path forward?”

It has been really hard as Blue Osa has been closed since March 14, and cash flow stopped abruptly. The region has been hit hard as 8 percent of Costa Rica’s GDP comes from tourism. Yogi Aaron believes the impact on the economy is much higher as they are not including the trickledown factor of the tourism income.

“We have budgeted a small amount of money to support as many staff as we can. We can help a little, but I fear it will not be enough,” says Yogi Aaron. “I suffer when I go into the future, and this moment has made me so aware of staying present. When I am present, I am happy and content. When I go into the future, I suffer. Badly.”

How Blue Osa is staying present for a better future

As he gathers his strength and focuses on being patient and present, Yogi Aaron sees the economic turmoil as a real blessing – a loss of at least a million dollars kind of blessing. Blue Osa is evaluating everything: Who do we want to be moving forward? What kind of guests do we want to invite here? What kind of people do we want to work with? What quality of life do we want to have?

And they have launched an online Yoga Teacher Training 200-hour Certification and a Residential Life-Transforming Program. Yes, you can now live in Costa Rica at Blue Osa. Our already fast-changing world is now in ever more extreme and accelerated transformation, as we continue to face a global pandemic, economic turmoil and social unrest. Before Covid, we were dealing with centralized and localized challenges within our own lives and businesses, industries, markets and countries. Today, we are impacted by what happens around the globe. Reality is things will likely get worse before they get better, and we cannot hide and ignore what is happening around us. We must keep up and, better yet, get ahead of change by anticipating what is to come and taking charge of our destiny. The key to this is to be present and make changes now for the future.

Present changes for the future

There are two aspects to my business: interDUCTUS management consulting practice and Renovad global retreats. Some of the immediate changes we implemented are rescheduling of our 2020 retreats to 2021, and refocusing our time on our change management consulting practice. We are taking an array of trainings and certifications online to further sharpen our readiness to support our clients. We are also identifying ways to collaborate with other management consultants, and the resorts where we host retreats, to support one another and weather the health, economic and social imperfect storm.

Take action today

Here are a few actions we have taken and we encourage you to consider as we all charge ahead:

New dates for Renovad trips! (Photo courtesy Pilar Avila)

  1. Face change head on: Be present with eyes open wide and consider changes you can initiate vs. changes you cannot control.
  1. Focus on people and health first: Start with you and the inner circle of family, friends, colleagues, employees, collaborators, clients, neighbors and community.
  1. Establish a new rhythm for life and business: Step one is placing you on the schedule! Tap virtual business networks events, education, and fitness, and learn something new.
  1. Mind your business: Again, consider people first by assessing any needed adjustments based on you and your team’s ability to deliver on contracts and commitments; assess clients’ needs to adjust your work flow and financial plan accordingly; know that cutting costs and staff is not always the answer, and that investing in who and what will keep you producing is an imperative investment.
  1. Adapt. Evolve. Transform: Adapt to the virtual economy; consider offering new services and products to generate new sources of cash flow; envision how you wish to evolve and elevate as a human, and make it happen.
  1. Face and conquer your fears: There is no fearless without fear as fear is part of our human condition and, when ignored, it can be paralyzing; place fear on notice by declaring “Fear, I see you, I know you and I am bigger and stronger than you”.

In life, change is a certain constant. Face it head on placing you, people and health first. Create a new rhythm as you evolve and transform. Remove all fears and obstacles. And be present to WIN.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a passport or a visa to travel to Costa Rica?

A visa is not required. As of December 31, 2002 all Canadian, US and EU citizens who travel to Costa Rica for tourism and pleasure purposes only need a valid passport. Please check your passport to make sure you have at least 6 months validity from the time you enter Costa Rica. If not, you should get a new passport.

Do I need any shots before visiting Costa Rica?

You do not need any shots or vaccines before visiting Costa Rica. However, we always suggest speaking with your Doctor and referring to the World Health Organization’s website before traveling anywhere.

How do I get to Costa Rica and Blue Osa?

You need to flight into Juan Santa Maria Airport in San Jose (SJO). There are a number of direct flights and other options from many main US hubs. Then you should book a connecting flight to Puerto Jimenez.

Domestic Costa Rican carriers, such as Sansa, offer numerous flights daily from San Jose to Puerto Jimenez, with the one-way trip taking approximately 45 minutes. It should be noted, however, that there are no late afternoon or evening flights with either air-carrier. The last flights into Puerto Jimenez depart from San Jose in the early afternoon. Visitors arriving into the country in the late afternoon or evening should take this into consideration.

Should you need to stay in San Jose due to flight schedules in and/or out, we recommend Marriott Courtyard near the San Jose airport in Alajuela.

Latina entrepreneur Pilar Avila launches Renovad experiential retreats around the world

Renovad’s carefully curated experiential retreats entice participants to take a breath of fresh air, clear their minds, stimulate their senses, refresh their souls and reconnect with the essence and power within themselves.

Meet Pilar Avila at the 2019 Entrepreneur Empowerment Lunch in Jersey City on June 13 – Wellness Panel Speaker

Inspired by her journeys across 5 continents and 18 countries, and the desire to spend more quality time with the extraordinary women who serve as her mentors and collaborators, Pilar launched Renovadexperiential retreats as an extension of her organizational change management consulting practice, interDUCTUS.

The inaugural 2019 programs, August 27-31 in Italyand in MoroccoNovember 27 – December 1, will be followed by experiences in Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Greece, Mexico and Thailand in 2020. Renovad pivots on deep destination knowledge, andremoving the burden of travel planning and the risk of trial & error, to design experiences focused on relaxation, inspiration and adventure.

The idea behind the experiential retreats
experiential retreats

Renovad experiential retreats are carefully curated by Founder and CEO Pilar Avila (L)

After building a fruitful career over 26 yearsproviding leadership at institutions across the private equity, hospitality, and nonprofit sectors, Pilar Avila decided to launch a consulting practice as a boutique lifestyle business.

Pilar stated, “As women focused on sustaining our families, advancing our businesses, and improving our communities, too often we place ourselves far down the priority list. Reality is that in the measure that we nourish ourselves, we are more effective in lifting others. This is the impetus for Renovad retreats.”

The experiential retreats are intentionally without speakers and prescribed programs, to open space and set the state of mind for participants to let go, listen to their inner voices, delight on the sounds they will encounter around the world, to ultimately reinvigorate mind, body and soul.A “come as you are and when you please” approach provides participants the freedom to flow, dial up and down on activities, and further tailor their own renewal experience.

Pilar Avila, the passage from corporate to entrepreneurship

Pilar’s reputation as a strategic, innovative, multidisciplinary, results-oriented business and civic change leader precedes her. But in her own words, it took a whole new level of gustiness to muster the courage and take the plunge from employment to entrepreneurship. “The biggest challenge I overcame in launching my business was the fear of leaving behind the certainty of an increasing and predictable income. I had always known that my biggest anxiety in life was building and maintaining financial security, being prepared to support my family in time of need and opportunity, and securing funds for a comfortable retirement.”

Pilar took inventory of what she had accumulated and figured that if she could generate funds to sustain her lifestyle while protecting her net worth, she would likely be in a good position to retire when the time comes. She decided to invest in herself by allocating 10 percent of her reserves as seed money for launching her business.

As Pilar’s network got word that she was in the process of launching a consulting practice, the first client knocked on her door and validated her move to entrepreneurship before she could even complete her new company branding and print business cards.

The three most relevant strengths Pilar developed through her career and that provided a solid foundation to launch her business included a proven ability to successfully manage most critical business aspects of a non profit and small business enterprise, a deep and wide network of collaborators and advisors across industries and markets, and a reputation for getting things done with a focused, transparent and win-win approach. “These continue to be my biggest assets that I’m tapping in building my management consulting practice and Renovad’s experiential retreats,” Pilar explained.

Building experiential retreats as an change agent

Beautiful landscapes of Italy for Renovad experiential retreats

As Pilar continues to delve in this new stage of life and business, her commitment as a change agent, passion about the rise of diverse leadership, and championing of equal access to economic opportunity and investment in education, are as strong as ever.

She isenergized by the determination that women are applying in advocating for equal pay and opportunity. She has been an advocate in her own way since the beginning of her career. “It always makes me smile, and wonder where I got the guts, when I recall approaching my boss during a yearly performance review – it was my second professional job five years into my career,” she said.

Considering her title and job responsibilities, not to mention her unstoppable drive and developing talent, Pilar knew that she was grossly underpaid. She showed up at the performance review ready with highlights of her accomplishments over the previous year. Her boss commended and thanked her for her vision and success in implementing a new national program.

Before the talk on salary and bonuses, she swiftly presented him with a basic budget of living expenses (in excel, of course) required to sustain the modest lifestyle of a young professional, such as her, in Washington, DC. The budget demonstrated that she was underpaid at least by 50 percent; she received a 30 percent increase in compensation on the spot. The next year her income increased by another 30 percent when she accepted a position at another organization.

“Three years later and eight years into my career, I broke into the six-figure income club and purchased my first home, one of seven real estate investments I have made to date. I am certain that without the audacity of standing up for the pay that I deserved, things would have worked out differently”.
