This year, for the first time, we are choosing organizations to work with during the giving season. March of Dimes is our first, and we will encourage you to shop with a purpose through our marketing affiliate program with Amazon. If you are shopping anyway, why not shop with the purpose to help?

Among the many organizations I have volunteered for, March of Dimes is one that I cherish and respect the most, not only for their mission but also because they deliver hope, hope in the future of our children and grandchildren, focusing on healthier mothers and healthier babies.

According to a 2014 study conducted by March of Dimes, more than one in nine, or 104,977 Hispanic births in the US were preterm (11.6%) in 2012. Hispanic mothers give birth to more premature babies than non-Hispanic white mothers; approximately one in four “preemies” are Hispanic in the United States.

Prematurity, a leading obstetric problem impacting both mothers and babies, refers to births occurring before the 37th week of pregnancy. Why are we so concerned about these babies? Because prematurity is the leading cause of death in the first month of life and is a major contributor to infant and childhood illness and disease. These babies are behind their game, and need a lot of extra care to pair up with their age and growth. The Institute of Medicine estimates the annual societal cost of preterm birth to be $26.2 billion.

“One of the things that caught our eye was, while Hispanics represent 17 percent of the population, 24 percent of premature babies are Hispanic,” Dr. Edward McCabe, senior vice president and chief medical officer of the March of Dimes, told Fox News Latino.

Another important factor we considered is that March of Dimes actually spends 77% of its annual budget in program expenses –compared to administrative (10%) and fundraising (14%) expenses (2014 data).

Our first pledge goes to March of Dimes

From December 1st to the 31st, our pledge is to donate $1 for every product you purchase through our site –look for the Amazon or March of Dimes banners and click on them to be redirected to the Amazon site. We thought it is the best and easiest way to keep track of those trying to help as we cannot accept direct donations –we would need a special organizational status. Affiliate programs like Amazon do not pay a lot of money so don’t think we are trying to use your shopping to get rich while giving crumbs to March of Dimes. For instance, we could earn from 1% on video game console products to up to 10% of discounted jewelry. So it means that if you buy 10 presents at 1 dollar each, we still make a contribution of $10. For additional information, see Amazon Advertising Fee Rates for Associates.

This time of year, when so much is spent in gifts and presents for our loved ones, let’s remember that shopping with a purpose can also make a difference in other people’s life. Remember that every penny counts and we want your pennies and ours to be meaningful this year. Help us help March of Dimes by shopping with a purpose!
